Overview

Globally, health systems have been challenged by the overwhelming demands of the COVID-19 pandemic. Supplies and manpower are being diverted to test and provide treatment for people who are presumed to have or have been diagnosed with COVID-19, but many countries suffer from limited resources. This results in some healthcare services being compromised in order to meet the demands of caring for COVID-19 patients, as well as other patient groups that are at risk. These fears could be efficiently addressed with location intelligence.

Challenge

Better monitor the readiness of medical facilities to admit patients and predict possible issues with providing medical services not only to COVID-19 patients, but also other high-risk patient groups.

Our solution

Information about the hospital’s beds capacity is added on the map. Additional data encodes a number of parameters, including the number of beds (represented by dot size), type of property, hospital name, address, and telephone number. Hospitals can then be filtered by these parameters. Counties can be filtered by population. Demography is represented by population (color) and its density. Each county includes the number of hospitals and the number of beds (3D).

Results

This map serves as a great management tool for a state/local healthcare decision maker looking for a straightforward but data-rich way to visualize capacity issues. Wide filtration options provide a number of opportunities for generating insights across different geographical areas. For example, it’s immediately clear that Nevada and Arizona may potentially suffer from a lack of capacity during outbreaks, leading to possible spillage to other states. Using this, and other insights gleaned from the capacity map, decision makers and analysts can instantly identify possible pain points and problem spots, and include them in future planning.
