Aspectum, a US company specializing in location intelligence, in collaboration with Predicio, a mobile-location and user behavior data company, conducted a research aimed at establishing the correlation between the human mobility and the novel coronavirus spread. Due to media allegations that people were actively violating the prohibition against visiting popular attractions in quarantined countries, Aspectum and Predicio had decided to examine the situation with deeper concern and figure out the importance of lockdown in Paris before it was officially announced on March 17. The study analyzed people from the same location spreading to all areas of the city within a 20-day period. Visualization of findings on the Aspectum map has helped indicate patterns, clusters of high and low values and outliers.

The research reveals the dataset of 290,000 mobile users that equates about 13% of citizens of Paris. With the purpose of investigating the impact of social interaction in public places and thus the possible coronavirus spread, a reference group of 79 people spotted on a platform of Paris Gare du Nord Train Station tentatively identified as tourists was studied.

The research showed up no decrease in the number of people outdoors in the first week of quarantine. Meanwhile, only about 30% of Parisians were active outside their households during the next seven day period.  As for tourists, although they spread to almost every part of the city, the crowding in popular attractions drastically diminished.

The data confirmed that the constrains in Paris demonstrate the effectiveness of government measures turned to the minimization of the citizens’ social activity during the coronavirus outbreak.
